Copied

A painting by my late father, James Field. He was an artist and illustrator with a passion for history. Below is the accompanying text he wrote at the time:

Henry Whiteside’s design was chosen by John Phillips to fulfil his idea of having a lighthouse on the Smalls (one of two groups of low lying rocks 21 miles off St David’s Head) Erected in 1776 the original wooden structure survived for more than 80 years, although major repairs and additional supports were needed over the years. The wooden structure was finally replaced in 1861.

After a rough night what relief must the keepers have felt to see a fine calm sunrise?
