A painting by my late father, James Field. He was an artist and illustrator with a passion for history. Below is the accompanying text he wrote at the time:
Between the wars HMS Furious was rebuilt with a flush flight deck which removed the problem of landing in the turbulence of the superstructure. Shortly before the outbreak of WW2 she was given an island superstructure to starboard. Early in the war Furious was involved in various North Atlantic and North Sea actions including the Norwegian campaign. As part of this campaign Furious carried Sea Gladiators of 804 Squadron for protection. Here we see three of these aircraft on patrol over the mother ship. The Sea Gladiator was similar to the land based version with arrestor hook and stowage for dinghies.
