James Field's Battle of Kadesh 1274BC

A painting by my late father, James Field. He was an artist and illustrator with a passion for history. Below is the accompanying text he wrote at the time: 

The initial assault by the heavy chariots of the Hittite army had broken the Amun division of the Egyptian army but they lost focus and began to look at plundering the Pharaohs private encampment. At this point, as seen in the painting, Ramses II led his lighter and more agile chariots troops in a wide arc from behind his Sherden bodyguards and plunged into the side of the disorganised Hittites. Killing men and horses without discrimination, by using their powerful bows, they turned the tide of the battle. It was now the Hittites who were in disarray and needed assistance from their King, Muwatalli, to extricate themslves. In the end both sides claimed victory but Kadesh remained under Hittite control.
