A painting by my late father, James Field. He was an artist and illustrator with a passion for history. Below is the accompanying text he wrote at the time:

18th October 1798
The surrender of the French frigate Loire, to the British HMS Anson, aided by the 28 gun Brig-sloop HMS Kangaroo was part of a series of running actions as a French fleet tried to return to port. Loire, sailing on her own, hoped to regain the port of Brest. Having lost main and fore topmasts in bad weather Capitaine Segond in the Loire had the misfortune to run into the Anson also damaged in the bad weather, the two ships fought to a standstill. Kangaroo arrived and raked Loire several times from astern until Segond had no choice but to surrender.
