James Field's Burning of the Egyptian Fleet in Alexandria Harbour 47AD

A painting by my late father, James Field. He was an artist and illustrator with a passion for history. Below is the accompanying text he wrote at the time: 

Part of the Siege of Alexandria was the burning of the Egyptian fleet of war galleys by Caesar and Cleopatra's troops. In this scene we are looking down onto the Eastern end of the port with the Royal Quarter of the city directly in front of the viewer. Caesar and Cleopatra held the Royal Quarter and had erected barricades in the streets to keep out the Egyptian forces firstly led by Arsinoe IV and later Ptolemy XIII. The siege was finally lifted and Ptolemy's army defeated in a pitch battle on the west side of the river Nile.
