James Field's Helldivers Practice Their Art

A painting by my late father, James Field. He was an artist and illustrator with a passion for history. Below is the accompanying text he wrote at the time:

Curtiss SBC-3 'Helldivers' (a generic name for all Curtiss dive bombers) from scouting squadron VS-3 practise dive bombing on the radio controlled target ship USS Stoddert. VS-3 was normally based on the aircraft carrier USS Saratoga (CV-3). In the foreground we see the three aircraft of green section starting their run into the target. The target ship would be controlled by a second ship following from a safe distance.
