James Field's Weasel v Badger v Dragonfly

Copied

A painting by my late father, James Field. He was an artist and illustrator with a passion for history. Below is the accompanying text he wrote at the time:

In a very similar scenario to the Westland Wagtail with its ABC Wasp engine, the Westland Weasel was defeated by its ABC Dragonfly nine cylinder 350hp engine. The Weasel was a two seat fighter type designed to succeed the Bristol F2b Fighter at the end of the First World War, however the failure of the power plant and the ending of the war meant further development was very limited. The Weasel along with the Bristol Badger and Austin Greyhound would have struggled to show their potential in fighter trials when so badly handicapped by their engines. One of four of James' paintings included in 'The Art of Flight' celebrating 100 years of Westland built aircraft.
